Welcome to the 2006 Martingrove Mariners Website

Though many of you don't know me, my name is Phil and I'll be your head coach for this year. Some of you have played before, others have not, but I hope by the end of the year everyone will have learned something and we'll all have had fun. Know what's fun? Coming to practice... mmm.... practice.

Now we've got that out of the way, I encourage you to take a look around the site. You'll find lineups so that you know where you're going to play before the game in case you're impatient, a schedule in case you lose your copy, directions to the parks, and a feature I found my team last year loved, your statistics. I'm telling you what I told them last year, that if I find out about any of you making fun of anyone else because of their stats, they will come down, and you'll be punished. It's just stupid to make fun of someone for something such as this, and it should be above you, you're 11 and 12 now. The reason they're there, and why my team last year liked them, is it allows you not only to reference how you're doing if you're curious, but you can find out where you need to improve and work on it. If you tell me what you feel you'd like to improve in, I'll be happy to help you.

Finally, I should give you my contact information. I'm on MSN almost any time I'm awake, so if you have an urgent question and you have MSN, you can probably find me on there. Otherwise, e-mail and phone work just as well.

Scouting Report:

The bad news is Daniel, who hasn't allowed a single run to the Red Sox all season, is gone this week. The good news is that although Daniel may be gone, the rest of you have been playing incredibly. Sorry I missed the last game, guys. From what I heard you guys did great, and I hope to see some more of it. I was thinking of having a practice this Wednesday, as we haven't had one in a while, but with games Thursday and Friday, don't want to overwork you guys. After our last game on the 24th, however, expect to have 3 different practices before the playoffs. You guys are doing great, but there's always room to improve. If you want to know what to work on with friends or at home in the meantime... fielding. It's still fielding. Your hitting is great. You're being selective yet still making good contact, and with Daniel gone, Brandon has stepped up his game immensely, allowing only 3 runs in 3 innings last game, striking out 6 batters. But when the pitcher strikes out a batter, of course they're going to be out. It's when the batter makes contact you guys need to help out. That's exactly what happened with Matei. He pitched two innings last game, and in his final, 0 run inning, struck out 2 batters. The inning before, he only walked 2 batters, but had 6 hits against him. For us to be winning in the playoffs we can't let this happen. If a pitcher isn't walking batters, we shouldn't be allowing more than 2 runs in an inning - 3 tops. To score a mercy inning when Matei was not walking batters and clearly wasn't off his game (The next inning he dominated) is a sign that if something needs work, it's fielding.
